The short answerThis free guide helps you ask the right questions and identify responsible sources. Confirm the details that apply to your own family, residence and locality before acting.
01 / Practical considerationUnderstand what applies
For a life-threatening emergency in Bulgaria, dial 112 for ambulance, fire or police. Calling 112 is free from fixed-line and mobile phones. Do not rely on calling without an active SIM. SIM-less emergency access differs between countries, and the European Commission did not list Bulgaria among countries mandating it in its 2022 report. A usable network signal is still essential. Keep an active SIM or roaming arrangement and an alternative way to call. European Commission 112 implementation report ↗. Keep your address in Bulgarian Cyrillic and note accurate location information.
02 / When to contact the embassyKnow what consular staff can do
British consular staff may help British nationals affected by serious illness, arrest, crime or bereavement, and can advise on emergency travel documents. They cannot replace Bulgarian emergency services, pay private bills, provide legal representation or secure special treatment. Use the prominent contact cards above, check the official embassy contact instructions and arrange an appointment before visiting.
03 / Practical considerationPlan the next step
Keep emergency contacts, medical information, insurance details and relevant documents accessible offline, and verify nearby healthcare facilities for your actual locality.

Emergency checklist / Official guidance checked 17 October 2026In an emergency, call 112 first.
In Bulgaria, dial 112 for police, ambulance or fire services. Tell the operator what has happened, where you are, the nearest recognisable landmark and whether anyone is in immediate danger. If you do not speak Bulgarian, say that you need help in English; language support may vary. Follow the operator's instructions and do not hang up until advised.
If a serious incident involves medical treatment, contact your travel or health insurer as soon as it is safe. If you need British consular assistance, use the FCDO support routes, but remember the embassy is not a replacement for Bulgarian emergency responders or an insurer. Keep the local address in Cyrillic and GPS coordinates available offline.
