Separate the questions: do you have the right to live in Bulgaria, do you have permission for the particular work, and what does working from Bulgaria mean for your employer, business and taxes? None is automatically answered by the others.
This is general information. Your nationality, residence, activity and other circumstances can affect what applies. Confirm consequential decisions with official authorities and qualified independent advisers.
Business travel is not the same as ongoing work.
GOV.UK's Bulgaria work guidance distinguishes some permitted short business-visitor activities, such as attending meetings, from employment or providing services. A visa-free visitor allowance does not automatically give unrestricted permission to work in Bulgaria.
British citizens intending to live and work in Bulgaria need to identify the appropriate residence and employment arrangements for the activity. Ask the Bulgarian embassy or competent migration and employment authorities for the current rules before agreeing a work start date.
- Write down exactly what work you intend to perform physically in Bulgaria.
- Separate occasional meetings from paid delivery of services.
- Do not rely on a generic 'digital nomad' description as legal permission.
Ask before acting: Does the specific work I will do qualify under my proposed residence and work status?
Working for a UK employer from Bulgaria.
Having a UK employment contract and remaining on UK payroll does not by itself establish the right to perform work from Bulgaria. GOV.UK describes different routes for posted workers, transfers, services to Bulgarian clients and working for Bulgarian employers, with their own requirements.
Ask your employer for written approval covering where you will work, whether the role can be performed abroad and who is responsible for payroll, social security, insurance, data protection and employment compliance. Seek specialist advice where the arrangement crosses legal systems.
- Get employer agreement before moving.
- Confirm immigration/work authorisation separately.
- Check IT security, company data and overseas insurance cover.
Ask before acting: Has the employer assessed the actual overseas employment arrangement, not merely agreed to a change of address?
Taking a role with a Bulgarian employer.
A local contract may involve Bulgarian payroll and an appropriate work-and-residence permission route. GOV.UK describes a single residence and work permit and EU Blue Card arrangements for certain types of employment, but neither is automatic. Eligibility, documentary requirements and timing depend on the specific job and current Bulgarian rules.
A prospective employer should identify its obligations and application steps. Do not take paid employment on the assumption that an offer letter or a general visit entitlement is sufficient.
Ask before acting: Which permit does the employer intend to support, and when is it lawful to begin work?
Freelancing or running a UK business while living abroad.
GOV.UK specifically describes a Bulgarian freelance work permit route and warns that applications depend on relevant conditions. Owning a UK limited company, holding UK clients or being self-employed does not automatically remove Bulgarian immigration, registration, tax or social insurance obligations.
Where you manage a UK company or control commercial decisions while living abroad, get qualified advice on the company's and your own position in both countries. A company can have considerations separate from its owner's residence. We don't offer a universal business-structure answer here.
Ask before acting: Is my work legally self-employment in Bulgaria, and who has assessed the personal and company obligations?
Tax, social security and health cover need separate answers.
UK tax residence is tested under HMRC's rules; Bulgarian residence and tax can follow different criteria. A UK-Bulgaria double taxation convention is in force, but it does not erase registration or return obligations. Social security contributions may require separate consideration from income tax.
Record where you physically work, what income arises, your employer or client locations, travel days and the professional advice you obtain. Do not rely on a single internet percentage to describe your net take-home pay.
Ask before acting: What income reporting, social security and healthcare cover apply to my actual work pattern?
Verify internet and a resilient working day.
If you need video meetings or access to critical services, ask broadband and mobile providers about serviceability at the exact address. Advertised regional coverage does not guarantee a reliable line at an individual rural property. Test the connection on site when possible.
Consider upload speed, power stability, data limits, a mobile fallback, equipment insurance and a workspace that is safe and quiet enough. If your work involves client data, your employer's security controls and cross-border data obligations still apply.
- Test download, upload and latency during normal working hours.
- Verify mobile reception indoors and plan a second connection if critical.
- Agree how you'll work during a power or network outage.
Ask before acting: Could I reliably complete a full workday from that address with an interruption plan?
