Start with the documents required for your exact immigration, family, employment and healthcare circumstances. There is no single universal Bulgarian moving pack. Confirm what the receiving authority requires before paying for translations, certificates or apostilles.
This is general information, not individual immigration, tax, legal, healthcare or financial advice. Rules and personal entitlements can differ. Verify current requirements directly with the responsible authority before acting.
Start with the receiving authority
Ask the Bulgarian consulate or relevant local authority for a written list of requirements for your particular case. Different procedures can call for originals, certified copies, translations into Bulgarian, an apostille, particular issue dates or a specified form.
Keep the official answer with the application pack. Avoid copying a checklist from an undated internet forum, especially for police certificates, marriage records, qualifications or documents for children.
Make a personal document folder
Keep passport details, any current residence documentation, health insurance evidence, driving licence, birth and marriage records where relevant, and employment, retirement or financial documents required for your application. Only bring sensitive papers when actually needed.
Use encrypted personal storage for digital copies and keep originals in secure hand luggage. Don't email passport scans or medical records to unverified intermediaries.
- Check the passport's validity against current Bulgarian entry rules.
- Keep an independent list of expiry dates for passports, permits and insurance.
- For children, ask about parental consent and education records when applicable.
Translations, apostilles and notarisation
The UK Legalisation Office may attach an apostille to certain UK-issued documents when another country requires one. That does not mean every document needs an apostille, nor does it replace a certified translation if one is required.
Confirm the correct order of certification, translation and legalisation directly with the authority receiving the document. Ask whether a paper or electronic apostille is accepted in your case, and check current UK fees and processing before posting originals.
Tell the UK organisations that need to know
Depending on your circumstances, leaving the UK can affect UK tax residence, self-assessment, State Pension payments, benefits, NHS entitlement, insurance and vehicle or driving paperwork. UK tax residents and those completing Self Assessment may have different ways to notify HMRC.
Keep a list of organisations to contact and ask each what they require. Do not cancel necessary healthcare cover or banking before you know your replacement arrangements will function.
If you receive UK benefits, check the specific benefit's overseas rules with the relevant office. Not every UK benefit is exportable.
Your first weeks after arrival
Keep a folder for any visa, entry evidence, residence permit process, Bulgarian address paperwork, health insurance enrolment, bank documents, utilities and locally issued identifiers. The order depends on your status and municipality, so confirm it rather than relying on another reader's timeline.
For the practical side, photograph meter readings with permission, identify your nearest pharmacy and make a short list of local service contacts you have personally verified.
- Confirm your next legal immigration or registration step.
- Check which office deals with your case and whether an appointment is required.
- Record every renewal or payment due date.
- Keep receipts and dated copies of submitted forms.
