Family life / Education

A move that works for everyone.

Moving with children means checking schooling, friendships, language and daily routines, not just searching for an address.

The important first question

Can the specific school and local authority confirm a realistic place and support for your child, based on their age, existing education and needs?

General guidance. Education administration, immigration and specialist provision require individual confirmation with the relevant Bulgarian authority.

01 / Family preparation

Start with the actual school, not a general promise

Bulgarian education follows local admission and administrative procedures. A child arriving from a UK school may need prior education records assessed, translations or recognition of completed schooling. Requirements depend on the stage of education and the destination authority.

Contact the actual school and the Regional Department of Education (Регионално управление на образованието, RDE/RUO) before making a firm moving plan. Ask about places, language of teaching, catchment arrangements and any documents requiring translation or legalisation.

02 / Family preparation

Language and the school day

Check the language of instruction, any Bulgarian-language support and your child's ability to participate fully. Do not infer that English-speaking provision exists because other British families live nearby.

Ask what a normal timetable looks like, how parents communicate with teachers, whether meals or after-school activities are provided, and how you would get your child home on a winter day.

03 / Family preparation

Records and qualifications

Keep secure copies of school reports, attendance and completed qualifications, together with the original documents required for a recognition or admission procedure. An official receiving school or education authority should tell you whether a document needs certified translation.

For older pupils, ask early about examination years, vocational or general pathways, recognition of studies, and whether their proposed transfer would affect further education plans. Do not assume a UK Year number maps directly to the Bulgarian system.

04 / Family preparation

Your child's residence and healthcare position

Each child's nationality and family circumstances matter for immigration and healthcare. Check travel permission requirements where appropriate, particularly if one parent or guardian is not travelling.

Plan repeat prescriptions, vaccinations, specialist appointments and any learning support with the responsible professionals. Confirm access to services rather than relying on vague assurances about availability in the region.

05 / Family preparation

Try the family routine before committing

If practical, visit during a working school week. Check the journey, safe roads, shops, parks and places to meet other children. Ask about childcare or after-school activities directly.

If your child needs accessible transport or additional learning support, discuss the actual provision with the prospective school and relevant authorities. A website description is not confirmation of a suitable placement.

06 / Family preparation

If your family plans change

School transfers, exams, family residence applications and medical care can require lead time. Keep your UK school informed at the appropriate stage and check any local authority responsibilities before removing a pupil.

Agree a contingency plan if admission, language support or travel arrangements differ from what you expected.
